COVID-19 Updates from International Student Services
International students with a valid study permit or study permit approval letter can now travel to Canada as long as they are registered at a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan. McGill is one of the institutions on the list of DLIs with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan. Students travelling to Canada will need to have a self-quarantine plan to ensure that they can self-isolate for 14 days after arrival.

The Buddy Program

To help you transition to your life in Montreal and McGill, the Buddy Program connects new international students with returning students. They provide the friendly face, helping hand, and first Montreal friendship that can make a world of difference for new arrivals. Buddies can also offer linguistic support, cultural guidance and information about life at McGill.

The Buddy Program offers new students:

     Typical activities might include:

  • linguistic support

  • cultural guidance

  • information about life at McGill

  • showing students around campus
  • locating banks and grocery stores near the University
  • discussing Montreal neighbourhoods to help find an apartment
  • chatting over a cup of coffeee

Registration for Winter 2021 is closed

Now in its 32nd year, the Buddy Program has helped thousands of international students - over 1500 last year - settle into McGill and Montreal.

Volunteers and new students are paired on a rolling basis during the year, allowing new Fall students to be in touch with their buddies over the summer. There is no hard deadline for signing up, although it's important for both volunteers and new students to sign up before the term begins in order to ensure a smooth pairing.
