COVID-19 Updates from International Student Services
International students with a valid study permit or study permit approval letter can now travel to Canada as long as they are registered at a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan. McGill is one of the institutions on the list of DLIs with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan. Students travelling to Canada will need to have a self-quarantine plan to ensure that they can self-isolate for 14 days after arrival.

Cancellation Webform

Students who will be outside of Canada for the duration of 2020-2021 academic year (September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021) and have NEVER entered Canada during this academic year

As part of the COVID-19 adapted measures, international students who can confirm that they will not enter Canada for the full 2020-2021 academic year (September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021) may request a cancellation from the International Health Insurance (IHI) plan by submitting the cancellation web form.

Full year cancellation requests must be made by submitting a self-declaration web form before the deadline of January 31, 2021. Any requests after January 31st 2021 will be done by e-mail and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

To be eligible for a full year cancellation, the international student must not be in Canada nor enter Canada during the entire 2020-2021 academic year (September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021).

Interest on the unpaid portion of the IHI fee will be automatically deferred until December 31st 2020. If they are not yet prepared to request a cancellation of the IHI plan by December 31st 2020, our office would suggest paying the IHI fee in full to ensure that they do not incur interest on this unpaid fee.

Please allow 30 days for the processing of the cancellation request. Upon the cancellation being processed, students will receive a credit to their student account.

For students who are currently in Canada but have decided to return home for the Winter and/or Summer 2021 terms due to the announcement of Winter 2021 being remote, please e-mail our office directly at international.health [at] mcgill.ca for further instruction.

DISCLAIMERS:

This web form will be available until January 31st 2021, requests after the deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that this web form is for students who have NEVER and will NEVER enter Canada during the current 2020-2021 academic year (September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021). If you have entered Canada during the current academic year but have since left Canada and do not plan to return during the current academic year, please do NOT fill in this web form but instead e-mail our office at international.health [at] mcgill.ca (), these requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for possible partial adjustment.

To be eligible for a full year cancellation, the international student must never have been in Canada during the entire 2020-2021 academic year (September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021).

Should you enter Canada during the 2020-2021 academic year, you must be insured for health care in Canada in accordance with the federal and provincial immigration requirements. You are responsible for contacting McGill University’s International Student Services to verify your eligibility to reactivate your International Health Insurance (IHI) plan before you arrive to Canada.

I certify that I will be outside of Canada for the entire duration of the 2020-2021 academic year: September 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021.

I understand that by submitting a request for a cancellation of the International Health Insurance coverage for the entire 2020-2021 academic year, I will have a break in my health insurance coverage. If I have to reapply for immigration documents, I will be responsible to provide an explanation to immigration authorities (Immigration Quebec and Immigration Canada) as to why I have a break of health insurance coverage. Example: a letter of explanation or proof that you completed your studies outside of Canada.

I understand that if for any reason, I enter Canada during the 2020-2021 academic year; it is my sole responsibility to contact McGill University’s International Student Services to inquire about my eligibility to reactivate my International Health Insurance plan. Failure to do so will result in me becoming responsible for any medical expenses (including accidental and hospitalization) incurred within Canada.

Upon the confirmation of the cancellation of your International Health Insurance plan, the insurance fee will be credited to your student account. If you do not have an outstanding balance, you may request a refund. Information on requesting a refund from Student Accounts can be found here.
