DESCRIPTION:The Legacy Game\n\nThe Legacy Game is about bringing together a
ll who love lacrosse to honour the sport’s Indigenous roots and legacy. Th
e name “Legacy Game” is inspired by the celebratory stick that is awarded
to the winning team at the end of the game. McGill’s Athletic Department w
as gifted this handcrafted stick as a keepsake and to honour the winning t
eam. Over the 3 years this special game has been played\, the winning team
’s plaque has been placed on this stick and displayed in the trophy case i
n Tomlison Hall. \n\nHeld on National day for Truth and Reconciliation (al
so known as Orange Shirt Day)\, the Legacy Game also serves as a time of r
eflection and remembrance. This day honours the survivors of the Indian Re
sidential School system and the children who never returned home\, while r
eminding us of the ongoing work needed to foster awareness\, healing\, and
  reconciliation. \n\n \n\n14th Annual Indigenous Awareness Weeks\n\nThis e
vent has been a part of McGill’s Annual Indigenous Awareness Weeks for the
past 3 years\, contributing to a space that encourages the McGill communi
ty to learn\, reflect\, and centre Indigenous excellence. For McGill’s 14t
h Annual Indigenous Awareness Weeks\, the theme is A Decade of Truth and R
econciliation\, marking 10 years since the final report of the Truth and R
econciliation Commission of Canada.  \n\nThe Legacy Game remains one of th
e main events where Indigeneity and truth and reconciliation are highlight
ed through sports. Each year\, we strive to create a space where Indigenou
s communities feel welcomed and celebrated\, while also offering non-Indig
enous fans the chance to learn about the game’s origins and show their sup
port for the traditions carried forward by today’s players. Truth and Reco
nciliation is an ongoing effort and  showcasing that through a medium like
the Legacy Game engages athletes\, fans\, and coaches to reflect on the o
rigins of the game they play and honour the land on which they play and co
aches to reflect on the origins of the game they play and honour the land
on which they play on.     \n\nThis year\, we have invited Kanien'kehá:ka
Elder Mike Mitchell\, who is a Lacrosse Hall of Famer to open our game in
a good way\, and DJ Poptrt a Kanien'kehá:ka artist\, to perform at halftim
 e. \n\nIn recognition of Orange Shirt Day\, free admission will be offered
to all attendees wearing an orange shirt. If you do not own an orange shi
rt or have forgotten it\, we will be selling Legacy Game shirts at the McG
ill x John Abbott Pow Wow at MacDonald Campus on September 19th\, and on g
ame day at the entrance. The t-shirt sale proceeds will go to The Network\
, an urban Indigenous organization that partners with Indigenous health\,
community\, and education program all around Montreal.  \n\nWe look forwar
d to seeing you cheer out there in your orange shirts!  \n\n \n
