52. Human Resources Strategy (medium term)

The Task Force calls on our University to develop and communicate a strategy to boost Indigenous representation and success within McGill’s workforce, by:

  • creating a position for an Indigenous Human Resources Consultant and develop a strategy to ensure efficient recruitment, retention and advancement of Indigenous staff at McGill;
  • seeking expertise and experience in developing and implementing this strategy through outside consultation (such as with the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business);
  • developing an Indigenous faculty and staff mentorship program; and
  • developing an Elder-in-Residence program and hiring Elders as staff, on salary with spaces provided to them for counselling, meeting and spiritual practices.

Progress

  • The Employment Equity Advisor and the Office of the Provost are developing an Indigenous faculty and staff mentorship program.
  • The Employment Equity Advisor and the Office of the Provost have identified areas to address regarding this Call to Action. 
  • The McGill Athletics Varsity Council, made up of student athletes has a new Equity, Diversity & Inclusion position on the committee. The position will further assist student athletes from the BIPOC community navigate their time at McGill as it relates to sport.

Next Steps

  • Working on Equity Education and creating a welcoming environment for Indigenous persons at McGill, which includes encouraging practices that will foster equity, community, and visibility.
  • Creating a position for an Indigenous Human Resources Consultant and developing a strategy to ensure efficient recruitment, retention, and advancement of Indigenous staff at McGill; Seeking expertise and experience in developing and implementing this strategy through outside consultation (such as with the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business). 
  • Developing a permanent Elder-in-Residence program and hiring Elders as staff, on salary with spaces provided to them for counselling, meeting, and spiritual practices.
  • Consultations are projected regarding drafting a position for a Human Resources Advisor in the Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).
