Air and Space Law: Key Issues for the 2020s.

The Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL), in collaboration with Qatar Airways, will host the inaugural Qatar Airways/McGill Rising Scholars in Air and Space Law Conference on 23 March 2019.
This new annual conference is designed to showcase the scholarly research being pursued by current LLM, DCL, Graduate Research Trainee, Postdoctoral, and Certificate students. A number of recent IASL and McGill Faculty of Law alumni will also be invited to present at the Conference. The Conference will follow the Qatar Airways/McGill Intramural Air Law Speed Moot Court Competition, taking place on 22 March 2019.
The Institute is very excited to launch this initiative with our partners at Qatar Airways. It will present a unique opportunity current students and young professionals to present their innovative ideas and research proposals before industry experts and academics in the fields of air law and space law.
Theme of the Conference
The organising theme for the one-day Conference will be “Air and Space Law: Key Issues for the 2020s”. The presentations should resonate with that forward-leaning theme.

Format of the Conference
Panels will be chaired by IASL and McGill Faculty of Law faculty members, as well as by aviation professionals from Qatar Airways under the direction of Senior Vice President Aeropolitical and Corporate Affairs Mr. Fathi Atti. There will be time allotted for questions from fellow panellists as well as from the audience. Some panels will run in simultaneous sessions depending on time constraints.
The Conference will feature a lunchtime keynote address by a distinguished invited guest, as well as a closing plenary session to discuss how the presentations have reflected the theme of the Conference. The plenary will also include awards to the top presenters based on the recommendations of the moderators and an overall award for the Best Presenter of the Conference. The Conference proceedings will be published in the Annals of Air and Space Law, the flagship journal of the Institute’s Centre for Research in Air and Space Law.
All participants at the Conference will be invited to enjoy a gala celebration on the evening of 23 March at the Museé James Simon Museum, the home and studio of one of Québec’s leading portrait artists, located across the street from the Institute.
Participation
To take part in the Conference, participants are invited to prepare a 10-minute presentation of their current research work (whether they are pursuing a dissertation, research project, grant-funded scholarship, or any other research activity within the Institute). It is not expected that presentations will reflect completed research: students may outline issues and challenges that they are currently considering, and offer suggestions as to the future direction of their research and possible solutions and resolutions. A (short) Power Point slide deck will be permitted on request.

The organisers will assign each presentation to an appropriate air law or space law panel.
