Structure of the Centre for Research in Air and Space Law

The Centre for Research in Air and Space Law is headed by the Director who is also the Director of the Institute of Air and Space Law. The day-to-day management of the Centre falls on the shoulder of the Executive Director, who is assisted by the Administrative Assistant and the Director of Publications. The Board of Directors the Centre supervises the management of the Centre.

Board of the Centre for Research in Air and Space Law

The Board of Directors of the Centre is composed of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, the Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations) and Provost of McGill University, as well as members who are highly respected experts and/or scholars in the fields of air and space law. The presence and involvement of these professionals and academics in the Board ensures the Centre continues to fulfil its mandate and maintain its stature as the world's premier specialised centre for research and outreach in the domain of air and space law.

  • Ms. Martine de Serres   (Adjunct Professor, Institute of Air and Space Law) Legal Counsel at Air Canada, graduate of the IASL.

  • Dr. Paul Fitzgerald (Adjunct Professor of IASL): Member of the Canadian Transportation Agency, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Editorial Board Member of the Annals of Air and Space Law, and was Senior Policy Advisor to Transport Canada advising the government on aviation, rail and marine matters.

  • Prof. Steven Freeland (Full Professor, School of law, University of Western Sydney, Australia): For several years, has been cooperating with the IASL and CRASL, Editorial Board Member of the Annals of Air and Space Law, Member of the Management Board of the McGill-led MILAMOS Project of the CRASL, contributed to McGill’s Global Space Governance Study, regularly participates in CRASL’s space law related conferences, often acts as an examiner of graduate theses of the IASL students, co-authored several papers with Ram Jakhu.

  • Prof. Fabien Gélinas (Full Professor, Faculty of Law): Often supervises graduate students from the IASL.

  • Prof. Peter PPC Haanappel (former Professor and Associate Dean, Faculty of Law): Taught at the IASL, Editorial Board Member of the Annals of Air and Space Law, and has maintained academic cooperation with IASL.

  • Prof. Richard Janda (Associate Professor, Faculty of Law): Previously taught at the IASL and often supervises graduate students from the IASL.

  • Prof. Frederic Mégret (Associate Professor, Faculty of Law): Often supervises graduate students from the IASL, acts as Associate Experts in the McGill-led MILAMOS Project of the CRASL.

  • Dr. Yaw Nyampong (Sessional Lecturer of IASL): Legal officer at the International Civil Aviation Organization, and served at McGill as the Executive Director of the CRASL, Arsenault Postdoctoral Fellow, and Boulton Fellow, contributed to McGill’s Global Space Governance Study, regularly participates in CRASL’s space law related conferences, often acts as an examiner of graduate theses of the IASL students, co-authored several papers with Ram Jakhu.

  • Dr. Joseph Pelton (former Dean, International Space University, France): For several years, has been cooperating with the IASL and CRASL, co-editor of McGill’s Global Space Governance Study, regularly participates in CRASL’s space law related conferences (sometimes as a co-chair), co-authored several papers with Ram Jakhu.

  • Prof. Genevieve Saumier (Full Professor, Faculty of Law): Often supervises graduate students from the IASL and serves as an advisor to the IASL Teams competing in the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competitions.

  • Dr. Francis Schubert (Adjunct Professor of IASL for the last 10 years): Deputy CEO, Skyguide Swiss Air Navigation Services Ltd, Switzerland, participates in CRASL’s conferences, and Editorial Board Member of the Annals of Air and Space Law.

  • Prof. Lionel Smith (Full Professor, Faculty of Law): Contributed to McGill’s Global Space Governance Study.

  • Prof. Jinyuan Su (Professor and Assistant Dean, School of Law, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, China): served McGill as Arsenault Postdoctoral Fellowship, is co-editing McGill’s monograph on NewSpace Commercialization and the Law, core-member of the Space Law Group of the McGill-led MILAMOS Project of the CRASL, contributed to McGill’s Global Space Governance Study, regularly participates in CRASL’s space law related conferences.
