Home Office Ergonomics: Kathryn Wiens, McGill’s Occupational Health Program Administrator is offering virtual ergonomic assessments to help ensure that your home workstation is set up to be as comfortable as possible. For advice, please email Kathryn.wiens [at] if you would like to schedule a Skype/Teams/FaceTime video call for a virtual assessment. Alternatively, you can also email her a picture of you sitting at your computer with any issues or concerns you have, and she will respond with some recommendations.

Setting up your workstation properly for your individual needs is important for reducing discomfort, pain and risk of injury. According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety “working in an office may seem harmless but musculoskeletal injuries can develop over time, especially for workers who spend the majority of their time sitting and typing in front of a computer".

Even with an optimal set-up, our bodies are not meant to be static for a long period of time. Remember to move often throughout the day. For tips on moving at work, please visit the Health and Well-Being page for more resources.

Work Well McGill: Ergonomic assessments for McGill Staff and Faculty (NOT BEING OFFERED WINTER 2022)

Work Well is run by the McGill Occupational Therapy Program and promotes wellness in the workplace. As part of this program, they offer remote office ergonomic assessments completed by occupational therapy students within the Professional Master’s Program. These assessments are overseen by Sara Saunders, a licenced occupational therapist and educator within the Occupational Therapy Program. These assessments are offered most years during the following months: January / February, June / July, and September / October. Please fill out the following form if you are interested in taking part in a remote ergonomic assessment and we will contact you when an opening becomes available. 

There are many HR colleagues who have received training to perform basic ergonomic workstation assessments. Should you be feeling discomfort at your workstation or if you would simply like to make sure your workstation is set up correctly to prevent pain or injury, do not hesitate to contact the person assigned to your faculty/department.
