DESCRIPTION:Allan Lumba (Concordia University)\n	\n	Since the period of “deco
lonization\,” powerful decisionmakers have considered intensified systemic
  mining\, drilling\, blasting\, tunneling\, and other geotechnical methods
as fundamentally necessary for capitalist growth in Southeast Asia. This
is especially true for coastal cities where land has historically been str
uctured as limited or scarce in relation to surrounding bodies of water. T
his talk examines this mode of thinking—what I call\, a neocolonial geolog
ic—and how it has remade and conditioned the contemporary infrastructure\,
social life\, and even political movements of metropolitan Manila for at
least the last six decades. Through a sustained observation of the consist
ent corporate and state investments in and constant community resistance t
o\, land reclamation projects\, this talk intends to further illuminate th
e ongoing neocolonial structures that have driven certain coastal cities i
n Asia to be considered successes\, and others\, like Manila\, as failures
