Honey-locust is a very popular shade tree in the Fabaceae family. It is native to Ontario and the Southeastern US, and it is cold hardy in the Montréal region. It has long, dangling, seed pods (up to 40 cm) and very thorny branches. The thorns are in clusters, unlike Rosaceae trees which have thorns borne singly. The leaves have many small leaflets, which are borne either in one set, or are branched into two levels of division (shown at number 8 in the illustration). The flowers are small and inconspicuous, and are usually either male or female, although the same tree will have both kinds of flowers present.
