Choke cherry has its flowers and fruits in pendulous clusters, and has broad shaped leaves, but otherwise is similar in appearance to pin cherry. The bark is a plain black compared to the pin cheery’s bark. It is a very common species on many kinds of sites, both shaded in the forest understory and in the open. Like the other cherries, its seeds are dispersed by birds after they have eaten the fruits. Choke cherry, as you might have already guessed, is very tart!
