A small tree with pale brown-gray bark that peels off vertically in small strips. Ironwood gets its name from its very heavy wood, the densest of any Canadian tree. The fruit is in clusters of inflated sacs, giving this tree its other name, hop-hornbeam, for its resemblance to the hop fruit.
