Hickories and walnuts are in the Juglandaceae family. Like ashes, they have similar compound leaves, but where the ash leaves are borne across from each other on the twig, Juglandaceae trees bear their leaves alternating along the stalk. Bitternut hickory has big, yellow buds (indicated by the number 1 in the illustration), and bark with a ridged diamond pattern. If you get close to the trunk and look up, a pattern emerges in the diamonds that looks like a giant bear climbed up the tree and left claw marks.
