This cute little maple doesn’t like the heat of the city. It prefers cool, shady spots, like the north slopes of mountains. It can be found very far north in the province compared to other members of the maple genus too, all the way up to the south end of James Bay. It grows naturally in the mature forest at the Morgan Arboretum in Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue, and might be encountered anywhere on the island of Montréal that has a mature forest with a cool, moist shady spot. It will be much shorter than the canopy trees around it, measuring in at less than 5 m.
