Health Insurance Coverage & Accessing Off-Campus Care

While studying at McGill, it is a requirement that you have some form of health insurance coverage, whether it is a provincial or international plan. Members of SSMU and PGSS are automatically enrolled in health/dental insurance plans that supplement provincial ones. Provincial plans only cover primary care (i.e. hospital/doctor/clinic visits) but sometimes do not cover additional costs such as ambulance services, dental/eye doctor visits, and prescriptions.

Students are able to opt-out of the supplemental plan in the event they are able to provide evidence that they have additional coverage (i.e. benefits from parents, employers, etc.). For more information on/to opt-out of your supplemental health insurance plan, please visit ihaveaplan.ca.

You may also choose to access off-campus health care during your time at McGill. If this is the case, please note that many clinics and services in Montreal, when presented with an out-of-province and/or international health insurance card, will require you to pay up front and then submit a claim to your insurance provider to be either fully or partially reimbursed by them.

For more information about health insurance coverage, as well as links to both provincial and international health insurance providers, visit the McGill Student Health Service website.

Check out the Off-Campus Clinic & Services page for more information about contacting/using off-campus health care services.

Off-Campus Counselling/Therapy & Listening Services

If you are looking for off-campus counselling/therapy or listening services, AMI-Québec provides a list of some of them in the Montreal area. Many of these are free of charge and open to anyone looking to use them.

Please keep in mind that a valid health insurance card may be required when using any off-campus service and there may be fees associated with these as well. Please consult with any and all services you are considering using concerning any fees and/or restrictions they may have on providing their services.
