ProgramDAAD Graduate Scholarship for Study/Research in Germany



DAAD offers scholarships to outstanding graduate students, PhD candidates, PhD holders, and Postdoctoral scholars for whom study and/or research at a German institution will have a significant impact. Visit the DAAD website for more information.

Value and Duration

  • Monthly stipend of EUR 850.
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover.
  • Travel subsidy, unless these expenses are covered another source of funding.
  • One-off study allowance.

For a study period in Germany as part of a postgraduate or Master's degree completed in a foreign country:

  • Usually one academic year (October 1, 2019-July 31, 2020) ; an extension is not possible.

How to Apply - ** As of 2019, Applicants apply directly to DAAD

Use the Manual for personal funding on the DAAD website for instructions on completing your application in the DAAD Portal. The Online Application Portal allows applicants to check the status of their application. Once an application has been accepted, a notification and a summary of the application in PDF format will be sent to the Portal.

Please print out the application summary as soon as it is received. Submit A TOTAL OF THREE SETS of the summary (all uploaded application materials) along with the original letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes) to Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (Graduate Funding), room 400, James Administration Building.

Exception: Fine Arts and Performing Music students submit directly to DAAD

Be sure to submit all materials and the correct amount of copies by deadline: 10 October. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. See below for further application instructions: 

Once received at McGill Graduate Funding, applications will be screened and forwarded to a central interdisciplinary committee for final review and ranking. McGill will forward selected application packages to DAAD on student's behalf.


10 October - before office close at 4:30 pm  **If  deadline falls on a weekend or Holiday Monday, then the deadline is the following working day.
