DESCRIPTION:The McGill Global Health Programs\, the Department of Biomedica
l Engineering\, and the Department of Bioengineering are proud to present
a seminar discussion with Dr. Catherine Klapperich of the Department of Bi
omedical Engineering at Boston University.\n\nAbout the Seminar:\n\nThe Kl
apperich Lab focuses on enabling advanced diagnostics in the broad area of
mother and child health. Our work focuses on the design and development o
f low cost devices to sensitively and specifically diagnose and monitor in
fectious diseases\,  detect biomarkers to assess cancer risk\, and monitor
adherence to drug regimens like highly active antiretroviral therapy. Our
devices include on board sample preparation modules using both plastic an
d paper components. We have demonstrated  molecular detection schemes usin
g paper based\, isothermal techniques that do not require electrical compo
nents or pumps. The talk will focus on our work over the last decade to in
tegrate these components into sample/answer out devices. Applications and
clinical needs assessments for translation of these technologies in low re
source settings and modern healthcare systems will be discussed.\n\nRefres
 hments will be served.\n
