DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Professor Colford will discuss a variety of s
 tudy designs and methods employed by epidemiologists\, economists\, and pu
 blic policy investigators to generate evidence through “Impact Evaluations
 ” of public health programs\; the focus will be on programs related to glo
 bal health and development.  The underlying principles will be illustrated
  with detailed examples employing cluster randomized trials\, matched coho
 rts\, regression discontinuity\, and stepped wedge designs.  The role of (
 and adjustment for) participant compliance will be highlighted with a disc
 ussion of a proposed estimator of complier average causal effects.  Space

 rd is a Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the Un
 iversity of California\, Berkeley.  He trained at Johns Hopkins (medical s
 chool)\, UC San Francisco (Internal Medicine residency\, Infectious Diseas
 es fellowship\, HIV/AIDS fellowship)\, Stanford (Chief Medical Resident)\,
  and UC Berkeley (MPH and PhD in Epidemiology).  He has received clinical 
 and classroom teaching awards at Stanford\, UC San Francisco\, and UC Berk
 eley.  Each year\, he teaches three semester-long courses at UC Berkeley o
 n Intervention Trial Design\, Impact Evaluation\, and Epidemiologic Method
 s.  Colford’s principal research focus is on interventions designed to red
 uce diseases related to water\, sanitation\, hygiene\, and nutrition.  He 
 has been the Principal Investigator of four NIH R01 awards as well as NIH 
 R03 and R21 awards.  He is the Principal Investigator of the WASH Benefits
  trial (washbenefits.org) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
   WASH Benefits is a 7-arm RCT enrolling 15\,000 children in Kenya and Ban
 gladesh designed to evaluate the separate and combined impacts of early ch
 ildhood interventions targeting water\, sanitation\, hygiene\, and nutriti
 onal status on growth and development.  This workshop is hosted by:    McG
