2019-2020 External Organization Project Submission

The call for external organizations to submit a project to the Global Health Scholars Undergraduate program is now open!

DEADLINE: December 13, 2019

The projects submitted to the Global Health Scholars Undergraduate program should be turnkey. That means the site, the onsite partner and supervisor (if applicable) must be clearly defined. If working with a partner, they must have already agreed to work with a McGill Undergraduate student (on-site or remotely) during the summer of 2020. We strongly encourage you to involve your collaborators in determining project objectives and skills for the students in the project you are proposing.

Funding and Hours:

  • Students will receive up to $5,000 for projects involving international travel or travel to Northern Canada. This funding is primarily to cover travel costs and a small stipend. Any funding left will go to the student as a small stipend.
  • Students will receive up to $2,500 to cover a small stipend for projects based in Montreal.
  • Funding should not be used for research costs.
  • All projects must be a total of 240 hours of work (equivalent of 6weeks of full-time work) and must be between May 1- August 31, 2020. The exact schedule can be determined by the student and supervisor. For international or Northern Canada projects a minimum of 4 full weeks (28 days) must be spent on-site.
  • Students will not receive their stipend before May 5th as their payment must correspond to the McGill fiscal year. Students leaving in May will be prioritized for the first payments processed after May 5th.
  • The stipend this program provides only covers the student for 240 hours of time on the project. If you would like the student to work on the project beyond this time period then that would need to be mutually agreed upon between the student and organization and payment versus volunteer hours should be discussed.
  • Research projects involving human subjects must have the approval of all appropriate ethics boards by May 2020 to be eligible for this program.

Application Process:

  • Undergraduate applicants will apply to Global Health Programs (NOT the organization for selection into the program through the GHP website. The student application period will be between January 9, 2020 and February 16, 2020.
  • Top candidates will be sent to the organization the second half of February 2020 and the organization can conduct interviews as needed in early March. Selected students will then be informed of their selection by the end of March by the GHP office.
  • Organizations should not communicate or interview students prior to GHP sending the top student applications in February.
  • We encourage you to involve your on-site partner or the on-site supervisor to participate in the selection process and/or interviews.
  • The organization will make the final decision on which student is selected for his/her project.

Special Instructions Related to Travel:

  • This must be a mentored research project and students traveling as part of the project should have good supervision by an established member of the research team. If you are not traveling with the student then it is essential that the student is connected to on-site supervisors by the organzation and that the student receives adequate information prior to departure.
  • Students are not allowed to travel to countries or regions with a DFATD-3 or higher (avoid all non-essential travel or avoid all travel) warning. To view the latest travel advisories, click here.
  • Students are to be assisting in a research project only. They are not to provide clinical care.
  • The partner institution must be aware of the upcoming visit of a McGill Undergraduate student to work on the research project.

Program expectations for Scholars:

  • Attend a mandatory two-part GHP orientation session on research ethics training on April 6, 2020, and April 8, 2020.
  • Complete the GHP online pre-departure training (for international and Northern Canada projects only).
  • Attend a mandatory project debrief seminar in September 2020
  • Submit a final report to the GHP office by October 2, 2020. This report is more a reflection on the program and a way to provide feedback to the program. We DO NOT expect a complete review paper or journal article at the end of the 240 hours.
  • Present a poster on their summer project at Global Health Night in November 2020. The poster does not have to present final research results.
  • Scholars will also have the opportunity to attend the McGill Summer Institute in Infectious Diseases and Global Health  in either the 2020 or 2021 summer as well as take the   course or the Interprofessional Global Health Course in the 2020-2021 academic year.

Please complete the form below by December 13, 2019. A PI may submit up to two projects to this program and each project must be submitted separately.

McGill University is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. McGill honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
