There are as many reasons to support McGill as there are students. Listed below are the most common ways that you can make a meaningful gift to provide students with the opportunities they need to contribute positively to the world around them and drive tomorrow’s society and economy.
You can support McGill University by giving online. Direct your gifts to McGill’s greatest needs, or choose to give towards scholarships and student aid, your faculty or school, the Library and more. It’s simple and means so much.

Gifts in Kind
Donors are welcome to make a “Gift in Kind” donation of property or a tangible item to McGill. This can include property such as real estate, works of art, book collections, equipment, furnishings, software and licensing. For more information, please consult our Gifts-in-Kind Policy.

McGill Staff Payroll Deduction
Payroll deduction is a convenient way for McGill employees to contribute on a regular basis to almost any area of the University. Simply complete the following form for funds to be automatically deducted from your pay cheque.

Follow these three easy steps and double the impact of your donation:
- Obtain your company's matching gift form (see below)
- Fill out the form and send it to McGill Matching Gift Program, 1430 Peel Street, Montreal, QC H3A 3T3
- McGill will contact your company and arrange for the matching gift.

McGill University owes its very existence to the foresight of a generous planned gift. The University was founded in 1821 with a bequest from the estate of Scottish-born Montreal merchant James McGill. McGill has since grown from a small college to one of the world’s leading research and teaching universities, thanks to the extraordinary legacy of many generations of supporters.
Create your own lasting legacy
Through your Will or other planned gift, you can create your own personal legacy at McGill that will empower future generations of students who in turn will go on to transform thousands of lives through their own contributions.
With easy and thoughtful planning, you can make provisions to recognize academic achievement or provide invaluable financial assistance, or you can support a faculty, school or department of your choice. You may also make your gift in honour or in memory of a special person in your life. Your legacy is your imprint that will ultimately leave a lasting impression on our students for many years to come.
How to make a transformative difference
A planned gift is a charitable donation which can be arranged during your lifetime, but is not available to the University until sometime in the future. Along with a gift in your Will through a bequest, there are other planning options that will also offer you financial benefits while allowing you to achieve your philanthropic goals and ultimately make a transformative difference.
Confirming your intentions
Have you included McGill in your estate plans? If so, we invite you to complete the Confidential Statement of Future Intent and return it to the Bequests & Planned Gifts Office. This document ensures that your wishes are fulfilled and that your gift is used as you have specified. You may direct your gift to support a specific faculty, school or department, or any other areas of your choice, such as scholarships, professorships, research and libraries. Unrestricted gifts are used by the University to address its most pressing needs at the time of receipt.

Donors to McGill who pay taxes in a country other than Canada are encouraged to review local tax laws and regulations or consult a local professional tax advisor for guidance.
Establishing an endowment is a great option for donors who wish to make large, transformative gifts to McGill that will not only have a direct and immediate impact but will also contribute to supporting the University in perpetuity.
When you endow a gift, it is structured so that the principal amount is invested and preserved, while only the investment income is used on an annual basis to benefit McGill. As a result, endowed gifts last forever by generating stable funding for donor-specified purposes, such as scholarships, fellowships, chairs, buildings, academic programs or the University’s greatest needs. Most endowments are named in honour of the donor and may be pledged over three to five years.
Administration of McGill’s endowment
Endowed funds will be maintained in perpetuity to be available for the purposes established by the donor. For this reason, the University adheres to the highest standards of stewardship and fiduciary responsibility for all endowment funds. The University endowment is managed actively by external and internal managers chosen and regularly evaluated according to guidelines approved by the Investment Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Governors, which also approves any changes in asset mix and distribution policy.
The overall objective is to obtain a total return (yield plus capital appreciation) that will provide an optimal, dependable source of income for the purposes specified for the endowment, while preserving the capital in real-dollar terms within the social and ethical norms of the University. Regular reports are made to donors in recognition of their importance to the University’s mission.
