Student Experiences

Marcy Maracle, Mohawk, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, ON, B.Sc.‘15, Ecological Determinants of Health with a minor in Psychology:

“The First Peoples’ House is like a piece of home tucked away inside McGill; the familiarity and warmth that everyone greets you with, even if you’re at first a stranger, is truly something special.”

Alex Gray, B. Sc. '16, Physiology

"The First Peoples' House has proven to be a pivotal resource during my Undergraduate Degree. The space has provided an environment where cultural expression is welcomed, and many forms of aid are always available. It would be difficult to imagine my experience at McGill without it."

Ashley Bach, Mishkeegogamang Ojibway First Nation, B.Sc, 2016 Environmental Science:

A large part of the reason I chose to attend McGill is the First Peoples' House. I first heard about the FPH during a summer program at McGill after grade 11. I met Kakwira and Paige and learned about what McGill and the FPH had to offer. Since then, the First Peoples' House has been integral to my academic success and social life at McGill. The FPH provides me with a safety net full of resources, friends, mentors, academic advisors, and even lunch! By visiting often I've made many friends and been offered incredible opportunities such as conferences, internships, and jobs. The FPH is also a safe space and refuge from daily life and difficulties at McGill. My experience at McGill has been so much better thanks to the FPH! I encourage all Indigenous students at McGill to check it out.

Ray Grafton - '17 B.C.L/LL.B Program, Faculty of Law

I can't imagine how my time at McGill would be without Dana, Paige, Kakwira and the rest of the gang at First People's House. FPH has been a welcoming and friendly environment providing me with friends, emotional support, opportunities to connect with youth and to grow spiritually and physically.
