McGill offers university-wide new student matching programs that match new students with an experienced student to help them navigate their first year of studies at McGill. These senior students are a wealth of experience and information and are happy to communicate with incoming students prior to their arrival in order to address any questions or concerns about McGill’s academic and social life. The First Friend program matches incoming students with another incoming student from the same region.

The New Student Mentorship Program facilitates ongoing and meaningful connections between new and returning domestic (Canadian) McGill students. Incoming students are matched with a trained, upper-year mentor in the same faculty or department (when possible). Through regular, one-on-one check-ins throughout the academic year, mentors share valuable first-hand experience on how to navigate university life and campus resources. Monthly check-ins between mentors and mentees include topics such as effective study strategies, student-life balance, campus resources, and goal setting.
