Health of Gender Minorities

Presenter: Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier

Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier is an Associate Professor in Family Medicine, currently working at the CLSC Cote-des-Neiges, Clinique Medic Elle and Head and Hands. His practice is varied with a specialization in Adolescent Health after completing a Fellowship in Adolescent Health at Bellevue Hospital in NYC. This conference will explore the health of transgender and gender diverse patients.

Public Health and the 3rd Principle of Family Medicine

Presenter: Dr. Robert Carlin

Dr. Robert Carlin is a Family Physician working at the CLSC Métro as well as working in public health for the region of Eeyou Istchee. He has a particular interest in understanding how public health skills may support our work as primary care physicians within communities. This workshop will focus on the 3rd principle of family medicine, the family physician is a resource to a defined practice population, using Dr. Carlin’s experiences and personal insight.

Indigenous Health

Presenter: Dr. Ojistoh Horn

Dr. Ojistoh Horn, a Mohawk family physician currently working in Akwesasne, will provide a look at indigenous health in Canada and Quebec. Dr. Horn completed medical school at the University of British Columbia, then completed McGill's Family Medicine residency program with a fellowship in Maternal and Child Health. Providing health services for such a diverse set of problems is the hallmark of Family Medicine, and Dr. Horn is proud to have met her lifetime goal of providing such services within her own community.

Presenter: Dr. Frédéric Douesnard-Malo

Dr. Frédéric Douesnard-Malo is a Family Physician who follows patients for prenatal care. He works at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Family Medicine Unit that offers interdisciplinary care for prenatal and pediatric patients that are vulnerable. This conference will cover prenatal care within the family medicine setting.

Choosing Family Medicine

Presenter: Dr. Juan Carlos Chirgwin

Dr. Juan Carlos Chrigwin completed his residency training at Saint Mary's Hospital in Montreal. He is currently practicing family medicine ambulatory care at the CLSC Parc Extension. His workshop will provide information on the McGill family medicine units, the roles of a family doctor, and personal reflections on how the profession changes the individual.

Rural Family Medicine

Presenters: Dr. François Venne amd Dr. Frédéric Veillet

Diversified. Stimulating. On a human scale. Come discover the challenges of family medicine practice in remote areas, and the reasons that led two young general practitioners to settle in Val-d'Or, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, 528 km northwest of Montreal.
Dr. Frédéric Veillet and Dr. François Venne are family physicians at the GMF-U de la Vallée-de-l'Or. Dr. Veillet also practices in the emergency medicine and obstetrics at the Hospital of Val-d'Or, while Dr. Venne also works in hospitalization, intensive care and geriatrics.

Prenatal Care for Vulnerable Populations

Presenter: Dr. Hannah Shenker

Dr. Hannah Shenker is a graduate of McGill Medical School and completed her family medicine residency at McGill, followed by a fellowship in maternal child health. Dr. Shenker currently practices family medicine obstetrics at the CLSC Cote des Neiges, the Jewish General Hospital and La Maison Bleue. She is specialized in the care of recent immigrant and refugee patients, with a focus on multidisciplinary care and teaching. This workshop will cover her varied practice and provide insights into maternal care in the family medicine setting.

Rural Family Medicine - SARROS

Presenter: Dr. Geneviève Auclair

Dr. Geneviève Auclair will provide a rich and dynamic picture of her reality of the northern rural areas and the cultural particularities she faces. Dr. Geneviève Auclair is Head of the Nunavik Regional Department of General Medicine and Ambassador involved in the promotion of the SARROS regions.

HIV Health

Presenter: Dr. Jason Friedman

Dr. Jason Friedman is a Family Physician whose practice mixes primary care medicine with special interests in HIV care, opioid dependence, and the screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. He is originally from Brooklyn, New York and grew up there and in suburban Maryland. He received an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a medical degree from McGill. He has previously worked in Nunavut and Nunavik, in rural British Columbia, and in South Sudan with Doctors without Borders.

Ultrasound

Presenter: MUSIG

Room: Large ultrasound room

This workshop will introduce students to Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and provide students with the opportunity to work with ultrasound machines. This workshop will help students connect what they learn in basic science courses, anatomy laboratory, and basic clinical foundations. This is achieved through participation in a hands-on session led by senior medical students and residents.

MSK

Presenters: PT/MD Workshop

Musculoskeletal diseases account for one of the largest causes of disability and clinical encounters in the primary care setting. The PTMD-Workshops helps medical students in preparing them to face such conditions and to be able to adequately diagnose and manage MSK disease. This workshop will provide hands on practice with a physiotherapist and students can interact and consolidate the theory of basic assessment techniques of the musculoskeletal (MSK) system.

Suturing

Suturing workshop sessions are for students interested in learning basic suturing techniques as well as basic square knot tying techniques. This workshop will be lead under the guidance of a resident as well as trained students to overlook the workshop.

 

Workshops at the New Residence Hall (3625 Parc Avenue)

Naloxone

Presenter: Ariane Litalien

Room: Ballroom B

This presentation will teach participants how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose and how to use Naloxone to respond to this medical emergency in a community setting (i.e. not in the hospital).
This training will be provided by an instructor who is certified by the Direction de la Santé Publique de Montréal. All participants with a RAMQ card are encouraged to get a free Naloxone kit at their pharmacy following this presentation.

Pelvic Exam/IUD

Presenters: Drs. Hiromi Tissera and Hiba Farhat

Room: Ballroom B

Hiromi Tissera is a first-year family medicine resident at Queen Elizabeth Health Complex. She completed her medical training at McGill University. She always found a passion in family medicine and really enjoys working with a varied population. Her interests are in community family medicine with a special interest in pediatrics. This hands on workshop will teach students how to do a pelvic exam and insertion of an intrauterine device insertion.

Head and Oral Exam

Presenter: Dr. Firoozeh Samim

Room: Ballroom B

Dr. Firoozeh Samim is an Oral Medicine Pathologist and works at the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill. Her workshop will highlight the key details of the head and neck physical exam and provide interesting pathology slides.

Wilderness Medicine

Presenter: Dr. Ahmad Mirza

Room: meeting point will be the New Residence Hall and the workshop will be on the Mont Royal unless indicated otherwise due to rain.

Wound Care

Presenter: Dr. Mark Karanofsky

Room: Ballroom B

This workshop will look at how to manage basic wounds as well as how to remove damaged tissue from a wound. This will be a hands on workshop with the opportunity to practice debridement skills. Dr. Mark Karanofsky is a family physician based at the Jewish General Hospital's, Herzl Clinic. He is an Assistant Professor in the department of Family Medicine at McGill University and is the Director of the Undergraduate program for the Department of family medicine. Since 2008 he has co-directed the diabetic foot ulcer clinic at the Jewish General Hospital and in 2007 completed the International Interprofessional Wound Care course through the University of Toronto.
