Residents, nurses, physicians and community group members at the
Annual Community Orientation 2013 in Cote des Neiges

On the first Wednesday of August each year, there is a community orientation for incoming family medicine residents at McGill University. The purpose is to introduce residents to the multicultural community that they serve as well as to the community organizations who are important partners in providing patients and the population with much needed social support and services to positively impact the broader determinants of health. The community orientation is organized by the Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) Committee at the Family Medicine Centre of St Mary’s Hospital with the support of several local community organizations including:

Project Genesis, a community group that assists people to better understand and defend their social and economic rights, especially those related to housing, basic income security, and access to public healthcare

Femmes du Monde, a women's center whose mission is to provide a meeting place, a sense of solidarity and mutual assistance among women

Club Ami, a support group which promotes the social and economic reintegration of people with mental illness

OEIL, a community group that works to improve housing conditions in the Côte-des-Neiges district by providing information and support to tenants, thus assisting underprivileged tenants and combatting housing deterioration and poverty

Multicaf, a community cafeteria that serves over 230 lunches a day, a food bank that currently offers assistance to over 750 families a month, and a meeting place where those in need can find support and, together, work towards social change and a just society
