Dr Hirsh Rosenfeld Annual Distinguished Public Lecture in Family Medicine

"Emergency Rooms: Chaotic or Heroic!"

Presented by: Dr. Peter Nugus

You are invited to the Dr Hirsh Rosenfeld Annual Distinguished Public Lecture in Family Medicine- with guest speaker, Dr. Peter Nugus, MA Hons, MEd, PhD.

In this Lecture, Dr. Peter Nugus will explore the inner workings of emergency rooms (ERs) from a unique perspective. His insights are drawn from thousands of hours of observations as an ethnographer in ERs in five different countries. The ER is a snapshot of the "wicked problems and tragic choices" of contemporary health care. The presentation exemplifies the competing priorities, tensions and politics that embroil ER health professionals. The ethical dilemmas and trade-offs we witness belong not only to the ER but reflect choices that emergency care poses for wider society. For anyone interested in our current health care system, particularly its future, this lecture on an insider's perspective of the workings of the critical emergency services will be thought provoking and illuminating.
