This section includes information regarding the changes to the April 2020 final exam period as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, including information on a special May deferred exam period

Exam Format

The format of final exams has changed from a 3-hour in person sit down exam to either a take-home exam or an open-book exam (timed).

Exam Schedule

The original exam schedule posted on the exam website will remain unchanged, though many instructors have chosen alternative forms of assessment and may no longer be holding a final exam. Please check with your instructor if you are not sure what the assessment for your course will be.

The date and time for your exam that appears on the original final exam schedule will either be (and this will be communicated to you by your instructor):

  1. when your take-home exam will be distributed by your instructor,
  2. when your take-home exam is due, or
  3. when your open-book exam (timed) will be held.

Take-home exams will be due at the date and time set by your instructor using the original exam date and time as a guide.

Exam Conflicts

The usual exam conflict rules apply but with modification to account for the time that you will have to write take-home exams or open-book exams (timed). Many take-home exams will have a longer timeline (e.g., 48-hour window) for completion, which will allow you the flexibility to arrange your time to write the exam within the allotted time window. If your take-home exam overlaps with an exam that has now changed to an open-book exam (timed) this is not considered a conflict as you will have the flexibility to use the allotted time to write your take-home exam, allowing you to resolve any conflicts in your schedule.

If you have more than three (3) exams scheduled to be completed in a 48 hour period, this may constitute an exam conflict.

Example: NOT an exam conflict

  • Exam 1: April 20 at 9am: timed 3 hour open-book exam
  • Exam 2: April 20 at 9am: 48 hour take-home released, due April 22 at 9am
  • Exam 3: April 20 at 9am: 48 hour take-home released, due April 22 at 9am

Example: Possible exam conflict

  • Exam 1: April 20 at 9am: timed 3 hour open-book exam
  • Exam 2: April 20 at 9am: 48 hour take-home released, due April 22 at 9am
  • Exam 3: April 20 at 9am: 48 hour take-home released, due April 22 at 9am
  • Exam 4*: April 21 at 9am: timed 3 hour open-book exam

*more than 3 exams in the same 48 hour period = a possible exam conflict

Exam conflicts will NOT be resolved automatically by the Exam Office as during the usual exam period. If you believe that you have an exam conflict, please contact the Exam Office via exam.es [at] mcgill.ca (email).

May and August Deferred Exam Periods

There will be two deferred exam periods for April 2020 final exams. The first will be May 7-14 and the second will be in August** (August 17, 19 & 21). Please refer to the Exams website for the application dates and when the exam schedule for each period will be posted.

For the Winter 2020 final exam period, you will not require medical documentation to request a deferred exam. If you request to defer an exam in May you are expected to write the exam during the May 7-14 period. If you are unable to write in May due to illness, exceptionally, you will be allowed to write it in the August** period. You do not need to submit a new deferred exam request in this situation.

IMPORTANT: If you write your final exam you are not eligible to apply for a deferred exam. This includes receiving the final exam from your instructor but not completing it.

Requests for deferred exams will be processed as normal. Please see the deferred exams page, Step 3: “Submit your request”. The deadline to request a deferred exam for the May deferred exam period is April 30, 2020. The window to request a deferred exam for the August deferred exam period will be in July. Check the Exams website for the specific application dates.

**Engineering students - deferred exams for courses administered by Engineering will only be offered in May, or the next time the course is offered. They will not be offered during the August deferral exam period. For more information, contact the Faculty of Engineering.**

**Law students - please refer to the Faculty of Law exams page for information on the May and August deferred exam periods and the application dates. The Faculty of Law will administer their own deferrals exams.**
