Homepage governance

The homepage and its content will be dually managed by Digital Communications and an editorial mechanism created by Communications and External Relations.

Digital Communications

The homepage elements highlighted in blue are managed or overseen by Digital Communications. These parts of the site (primarily navigational and wayfinding elements) are based primarily on analytics data, user testing data, best practices and consultations with units across the university. As such, their content and design is likely to remain fairly stable over time. These elements include:

  • The navigation (main menu)
  • The header
  • The popular links
  • The footer
  • The audience menus (Current Students, Faculty & Staff, Alumni & Friends)

Editorial mechanism

The elements highlighted in green are managed by the editorial mechanism. This mechanism—a collaborative process between Communications and External Relations and other university units—will be responsible for content pieces that are frequently updated. This content will will be generated based on the homepage content strategy, with the goal of aligning the homepage content with user needs, the university's brand and its strategic priorities. These areas of the homepage include (highlighted in green):

  • Branding feature (image and tagline)
  • Top Stories (linked keywords)
  • McGill Stories (a collection of profiles and testimonials grouped around a top-of-mind theme)
