What is the focus of the program?
Training the next generation of leaders to catalyze solutions that benefit population health and welfare through research and diverse learning opportunities that focus on how social conditions affect health and well-being. Provide McGill students with the Experience of doing policy-relevant research within a local policy organization.
Who is it for?

McGill advanced undergraduate (60+ credits) and graduate students from any department.
What do students do?
- They are paired with two supervisors: a staff member of the Montreal Regional Public Health Department (Direction régionale de santé publique de Montréal) and the City of Montreal, and an IHSP faculty member. Interns spend 10-15 hours per week on a project defined by their supervisors.
- Students meet with their supervisors regularly.
- As a cohort, students attend training sessions for 1 to 2 hours every week at the IHSP in trainings moving research to policy (eg. healthy social policy, knowledge translation, networking skills).
Where and when does it take place?
- At the Montreal Public Health Department or the City of Montreal, and the IHSP (Charles Meredith House). The program will run in the winter term of 2020 and offering the program in the Fall of 2020 is being considered.

This is a pilot initiative. In the Winter term of 2020, two internships are being offered. More internship opportunities for the Fall of 2020 will be considered.
Program Description
The Institute for Health and Social Policy (IHSP) Internship programs train and develop the next generation of leaders to catalyze solutions that benefit population health, well-being and equity. Programs offer research opportunities and diverse training that build on the strengths of graduate and undergraduate education at McGill University in investigating how social conditions affect health and well-being. In the fall of 2020, we are piloting this new internship program for students to experience doing policy-relevant research within a local policy organization. A major component of the internship is the work carried out in collaboration with policy and academic supervisors, while a weekly seminar/workshop series exposes interns to a variety of disciplines and provides training in translating research into policy.
Through hands-on experience in a local policy organization, and training at the IHSP, interns will participate in both a vibrant policy and academic environment, learn how to communicate research findings to policymakers, the media or general public, and gain insight into different disciplinary approaches. Students will develop their professional network by interacting with fellow interns, graduate students, faculty and staff at the IHSP, as well as with the staff of a local policy organization and their partners.
