Dr. Athanasios Katsarkas was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. He studied Medicine in the Aristotelian University of this city and completed his post-graduate training in Germany, United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. He is an otolaryngologist and full professor with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. He is also the director of the specialised Dizziness Clinic and co-director of the Vestibular Research Laboratory at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
For many years he has been involved in research on the function and dysfunction of the vestibular system and dizziness in collaboration with Dr. Henrietta Galiana, Ms. Heather Smith, graduate students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at McGill University and residents and fellows from our Department. This research, funded by various grant agencies, is internationally known and, with his collaborators, they have more than 100 publications in international scientific journals. He has also more than 100 presentations in international conferences. He and his collaborators have been repeatedly guest speakers at international conferences to present their clinical experience and the results of their research, including the application of mathematical models, in assessing the function and dysfunction of the vestibular system.
Dr. Katsarkas is a member of a number of professional and scientific societies, including the Society for Neuroscience, the American Otological Society, the American Neurotology Society, the International Collegium of Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the Barany Society, the Canadian Bioethics Society.
