DESCRIPTION:The Reynolds Atelier hosts one artist\, writer\, or creative pr
actitioner to lead a hands-on workshop with a select group of students. Th
ese events are geared towards engaging students in the Department of Engli
sh in various aspects of making and doing. They are often\, but not always
\, accompanied by related programming that serves the larger community wit
hin and beyond the department. Previous recipients of this fellowship have
included video sound performance artist Lamathilde\, experimental filmmak
er Malena Szlam\, and nonfiction filmmaker Alan Handel.\n\nThe leader of t
he 2023-2024 Reynolds Atelier is artist/activist/archivist kimura byol lem
oine (키무라 별 르뫈 – 木村 ビヨル レムワンー) a conceptual multimedia feminist artist who
  works on identities (diaspora\, ethnicity\, colorism\, post-colonialism\,
  immigration\, gender)\, and expresses it with calligraphy\, paintings\, d
 igital images\, poems\, videos and collaborations. kimura*lemoine’s work h
as been exhibited\, screened\, published and supported nationally and inte
rnationally. As curator\, ze has developed projects that give voice and vi
 sibility to minorities\n\nkimura*lemoine\, as a Korean-born adoptee\, is c

 , S/Korea)\, K.O.A (Korean Overseas Adoptee\, 1996\, Korea)\, KameleonZ (1

 U: Selfying the other'\n\nMonday March 11\, 18:00-20:00\n	Friday\, March 15
\, 10:00-17:00 (workshop will run all day but students must be there betwe
en 15:00-17:00)\n\nThese days\, we often turn the cellphone camera on ours
elves\, and we consume the images others portray of themselves. As a non-c
onventional artist with intersectional identities\, I propose a workshop t
o challenge these habits of self-portraiture and our assumptions about rep
resenting ourselves and others. This workshop will attempt to explore thes
e questions through working in pairs to create portraits of other people\,
  across different mediums (Zines\, video\, writing\, painting\, collage\,
digital\, sound\, collaboration/curating) according to the practices of th
e participants involved. During the 2 day workshop\, you will make a portr
 ait of your collaborator (abstract\, surrealist\, glitchy\, etc…) within t
he enabling constraints of our approach. We will explore artmaking\, colla
 boration\, listening\, intersectionality\, respect\, normativity\, deconst
ruction etc. Through the art making process\, we will learn about negotiat
 ion\, power dynamics\, management of ego\, communication and archiving.\n
\nOpen to students working with different practices. Please email ara.oste
rweil [at] mcgill.ca () to sign up to participate. You can visit the artis
 t’s website here.\n
