Following the policy passed by the McGill Senate in December 2020, which allows students to take up to a total of 6 credits over the fall 2020 and winter 2021 terms to be graded under the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, or S/U, option (https://www.mcgill.ca/students/courses/plan/s-u), the Department of English will allow required or complementary courses taken under this option to count toward Major, Minor, Honours, and Joint Honours program credit in all three streams.
The only Department of English course not included in this policy is ENGL 491, Honours Essay; students enrolled in ENGL 491 must earn a B+ or higher in the course in order to graduate with an Honours or Joint Honours degree.
Courses for which the S/U option is exercised will not be calculated in a student’s GPA but will contribute to credits completed. Courses for which the S/U option is exercised this term will not count toward the maximum number of credits that a student may designate as S/U (i.e., up to 10 percent of total degree credits).

Honours application and Honours program policy regarding courses taken under the S/U option
Students who have taken required or complementary courses for their English programs under the S/U option during the winter 2020, fall 2020, and/or winter 2021 terms are still allowed to apply to the Honours program. However, students wishing to apply to the Honours program must have taken at least 18 credits in ENGL courses for a letter grade.
Students in the Honours program may count up to 9 credits of courses taken under the S/U option during the winter 2020, fall 2020, and/or winter 2021 terms toward their Honours degree. Students in the Joint Honours program may count up to 6 credits of courses taken under the S/U option during the winter 2020, fall 2020, and/or winter 2021 terms toward their Joint Honours degree.
