Software Development Intern at Brighten Health

Startup

Founded by 3 computer and mechanical engineering students, Brighten is a new tech start-up focused on providing Canadians with personalized, accessible, and comprehensive solutions for developing routines that support mental wellness and facilitate the management of winter depression. Currently, we have 9 active members on our team and are looking to expand! We’re building the first smart light therapy lamp which connects via Bluetooth to our mobile application. Our app helps individuals actively take control of their mental health, and targets the clinically-proven factors affecting winter depression. Most people know what to do to take care of their mental health, but consistently doing them requires conscious planning and commitment. This value gap is where our company mission was founded.

Internship Description

At Brighten, we aim to help users manage winter depression by combining light therapy, habit management, and actionable user encouragement through software. This summer, we will need a software development intern who will be responsible for helping build our app using React Native, among other tools in our tech stack. If you have any experience programming mobile applications on React Native, or are interested in learning how to program mobile applications and are passionate about mental healthcare, we would love to have you on board. Over this 12-week internship, you will be integrated into our dynamic software team, to help build a scalable and engaging mobile application. You will learn how to develop the back-end and front-end of a mobile application in React Native, as well as the rudiments of UI and UX design. Additionally, if time allows, the intern will work on a backend light-tracking feature for our mobile app which will require research and development of appropriate inputs and knowledge of algorithms to produce software that would allow our app to determine how much bright light the user has been exposed to throughout the day, providing our overall platform with greater insight into their habits, and thus how to optimize them.
