Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Platform

 

The Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Platform at the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism comprises three components: metabolic chambers, a telemetry-based monitoring system, and an EchoMRI body-composition analyzer. 

1. Metabolic Chambers (energy expenditure measuring system):

The LabMaster / PhenoMaster system from TSE Systems (Germany) based on modified standard housing cages measures:

  • Metabolic performance via indirect calorimetry, O2 consumption and CO2 production, Respiratory Exchange Rate (RER), Energy Expenditure
  • Food and water intake: both amount and temporal pattern
  • Locomotor activity via sensor frames (based on IR beam breaking): total activity, ambulatory and fine movements, rearing

2. Telemetry-Based Monitoring System:

This system utilizes implanted transmitters in conjunction with the Vital View Data Acquisition System (Mini Mitter, USA) and the Drink/Feed cages from TSE Systems (Germany).

Parameters that can be simultaneously monitored:

  • Body temperature
  • Locomotor activity
  • Heart rate
  • Food intake
  • Water intake

3. EchoMRI system:

The EcoMRI system (from EchoMRI, USA) provides precise quantitative information of total body fat, lean mass, free water, and total body water in live awake mice (no anesthesia needed).
