The Herschel and Christine Victor Fellowship in Education

The Herschel and Christine Victor Fellowship in Education was established in 2000 by Herschel Victor (B.Com. 1944) for an outstanding graduate student in the Faculty of Education. This faculty-level endowment is awarded annually and is non-renewable.

The Jackie Kirk Fellowship

The Jackie Kirk Fellowship was established in 2009 by Andrew Kirk in memory of his wife, Jackie Kirk. It is awarded to outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Education, with a preference for students whose research has a focus on any one or a combination of the following: post-conflict education on developing countries, women teachers, and girlhood studies. This faculty-level endowment is awarded annually and is non-renewable.

The Jackie Kirk Fieldwork Support Fund

Established in 2009 by McGill Professor Andrew Kirk in memory of his wife, Jackie Kirk, to recognize and promote the scholarship and achievements of students conducting fieldwork.

The Fund will support and recognize an outstanding graduate student in the Faculty of Education and be awarded annually on the basis of academic merit.

Walter A. and K. Mary Marsh Fellowships in Education

Awarded to outstanding graduate students who have demonstrated leadership qualities. Preference will be given to graduate students conducting research with a focus on teaching.

Dr. Gauri Shankar Guha Award in International Development Education

Established in 2003 by Dr. Ratna Ghosh in her late father's name for an outstanding graduate student pursuing research in international development education in the Faculty of Education. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and aptitude for research by the Faculty of Education Awards Committee.

The Stansfield Award for School-based Classroom Research

Established in 2000 by a bequest by Ellen Edith Grubb Stansfield (BA'29, MA'31) in recognition of her experience, leadership and interest in education, schools and classrooms. Awarded by the Faculty of Education to an outstanding student entering the first year of a full-time MA thesis or PhD program in the Faculty of Education with research in classroom and school contexts.

The Muriel H. Marsh and Harold A. Marsh Endowment

Established in 2018 by a bequest by from Katherine Mary Eaton Marsh (DipEd 1942) to support in-course scholarships, fellowships, and projects. Eligibility: Granted to outstanding graduate students working on projects on children with special needs.

Balyta Family Fellowship in STEM Education

Established in 2021 by Dr. Peter Balyta, BEd 1994, PhD 2007 and Mrs. Ann Balyta, BSc(PT) 1994. Eligibility: Granted to outstanding Master's students pursuing research in STEM education.

Graduate Student Travel Award in Education

Established in 2016 by Mabel T. C. Young (MA'65) for graduate students in the Faculty of Education who are travelling to pursue research in order to enhance or complete graduate work in his or her field of study, and can include but is not limited to, attending a conference or taking a course.

Value: Estimated $1500 for international students travelling within Canada; estimated $3500 for Canadian students travelling to South America, Africa or Asia (especially China or Hong Kong).

Other Financing Possibilities - Specific Awards

Education Graduate Student's Society (EGSS)/Faculty of Education Travel Award

All Education graduate students (including part-time, international and non-thesis) can apply for the EGSS/Faculty of Education Travel Award. Applicants must be presenters (paper, poster, panel, etc.) at a workshop or conference (proof of acceptance is required).

Application Deadlines:Students must submit applications by the following deadlines:
For events held November 1 to February 29 inclusive: October 15
For events held March 1 to June 30 inclusive: February 15
For events held July 1 to October 31 inclusive: June 15

EGSS Fellowships

Master's Professional Leadership Award, established in 2006 to recognize the community leadership and professional involvement of a Master's student in the Faculty of Education. Valued at $500, this is granted to a student (full or part-time) who has been enrolled in a non-thesis degree for at least one semester.

Master's Research Excellence, was established to recognize the research excellence of a Master's student in the Faculty of Education. This $500 award is granted to a student (full-time) who has been enrolled in a thesis degree program for at least one semester.

Doctoral Award for Research and Professional Excellence, awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Education. Valued at $1,000, it recognizes a student who has applied his/her research or academic learning and has made a distinctive contribution to the profession or wider community.

Other Financing Possibilities - Varia

  • Loans and Bursaries from the Federal or Provincial Government
  • Differential Fee Waiver for the international fee supplement

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office awards approximately 120 Differential Fee Waivers per term to international students, approximate value:
$5,750 - Ph.D.
$6,500 - Masters.

These differential fee waivers are restricted to international graduate students at McGill whose visa status requires them to pay full international tuition fees. Recipients must be registered full-time and be within the period of residency. (See explanation of residency in the Program Requirements section of the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Calendar). Students in a qualifying year or additional session are not eligible. Students in "privatized" programs are not eligible. All eligible international students are automatically considered by departments for differential fee waivers, if the unit has them to offer. Please consult your individual department for nomination procedures. Interested students who cannot otherwise qualify for an external differential fee waiver should contact the department to which they are applying.
