Faculty of Education Global Engagement Office (GEO)

Advancing meaningful, sustainable, and reciprocal global partnerships in education and human development

The Global Engagement Office (GEO) serves as the Faculty of Education’s hub for international partnership development, student and faculty mobility, transnational education initiatives, and operational support. The GEO brings together cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, and multilingual expertise to support meaningful and sustainable collaboration with partners around the world.

GEO's work is guided by the Faculty of Education's Strategic Plan, which positions the Faculty as a globally engaged, community-rooted hub for teaching, research, and knowledge mobilization, and by McGill University's Global Engagement Strategic Framework, which promotes international collaboration, mobility, and partnerships that advance knowledge and address shared global challenges.

Through strategic partnerships, mobility initiatives, transnational education programs, and collaborative research opportunities, GEO helps advance the Faculty's mission of fostering relevance and excellence in education for human development while extending the Faculty's impact in Quebec, Canada, and internationally.

Strategic Planning and Organizational Alignment

GEO helps shape and coordinate the Faculty’s global engagement priorities by developing strategic plans, strengthening connections with McGill’s global engagement ecosystem. This work ensures that global engagement contributes to the Faculty's goal of strengthening its relevance, visibility, and impact locally and internationally while fostering collaborative and sustainable partnerships.

Faculty and Student Mobility

GEO supports inbound, outbound, and virtual mobility opportunities for faculty, students, and visiting academics, creating meaningful international learning, teaching, and research experiences. Initiatives include faculty exchanges, student participation in international programs and institutes, support for visiting scholars, and innovative virtual exchange opportunities that connect McGill students with peers around the world through collaborative online learning. These activities contribute to a more globally connected student experience and expand access to international engagement opportunities across the Faculty.

Virtual Exchange Program:

Building on a successful pilot implementation bringing together faculty and students from McGill University and Beijing Normal University, this initiative connects students with peers at partner institutions through structured, course-embedded international collaborations. Through cross-cultural dialogue, comparative inquiry, and joint projects, students develop intercultural and global competencies while engaging with diverse educational perspectives. Supported by the Entente Canada-Quebec (ECQ) program for the 2026-2027 academic year, the initiative expands access to international learning experiences in ways that are inclusive, sustainable, and fully integrated into existing courses.

Visiting Professors and Academics:

The Faculty of Education welcomes visiting professors and academics whose teaching, research, and professional interests align with those of our faculty members. Individuals interested in a visiting appointment should first identify and contact a Faculty of Education professor willing to serve as an academic host. Once a faculty sponsor has been identified, the Global Engagement Office can provide information on Faculty processes.

Transnational Education

GEO works with international partners to develop responsive academic programs, professional learning opportunities, and collaborative initiatives that address shared educational priorities. This includes the development of transnational education partnerships and initiatives such as the International Leadership in Education and Development (ILEAD) programs portfolio, which brings together educational leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to address contemporary challenges in education through globally informed and locally relevant learning experiences. Through co-created partnerships and innovative program models, this work advances the Faculty’s commitment to relevant educational offerings, global collaboration, and human development.

Partnership Development

GEO supports the development of strategic institutional partnerships that connect Faculty expertise with global educational needs. Working closely with academic units, University partners, and international institutions, GEO helps cultivate collaborations that advance teaching, research, mobility, and professional learning opportunities. This work includes supporting partnership agreements, academic collaborations, and joint initiatives that strengthen the Faculty's international impact and long-term global engagement goals.

Outreach and Delegation Visits

GEO facilitates engagement with international institutions, delegations, government partners, and professional networks through strategic visits, meetings, and outreach activities. These efforts expand the Faculty’s global presence, strengthen long-term relationships, and create new opportunities for collaboration in education and human development.
