Peel St. project: May 2018-December 2018

A large City of Montreal project to replace aging infrastructure under Peel St. between Sherbrooke St. and Pine Ave. is scheduled to start in June, with preparatory work set to begin on Monday, May 14, 2018. During that preparatory work, which should last eight weeks, vehicular traffic on Peel St. will be reduced to one lane southbound. The City will install signage redirecting northbound vehicle traffic. Pedestrians will still be able to circulate on Peel St. and access to McGill buildings should not be affected. (The McGill daycare centre has temporarily relocated to the upper residence buildings until June 21, 2018.)

The first phases of the Peel St. project are expected to last until the end of 2018. Final street paving and landscaping are planned for the spring of 2019. One portion or another of Peel St. will be closed to vehicle traffic during the work. We will be sure to keep you updated on the different phases and how they will affect the McGill community as details are confirmed (these will be posted on our Construction website here). As with the Promenade urbaine project last year on McTavish St., we will work with the City throughout the project to make sure the disruptions to the McGill community are minimized.

Building Envelope repairs: June 2018-November 2018 (phase 1)

Improvements to the envelope of McGill buildings include the restoration of the façade masonry, as well as the replacement or repairs to roofs, windows and foundations. Several major projects are planned in the next few years, including improvements to the Education building envelope.

The Education Building’s envelope has severely deteriorated over time due to frequent water infiltration. This project consists of restoring the envelope, starting with repairs or replacement of the roof and the exterior brick walls in 2018, followed with repairs to the building terraces and the electrical room in 2019, and to the garage in 2020.
