Meet the new Artists-in-Residence and Art Mediator

Kama La Mackerel, Artist-in-Residence

Kama La Mackerel is a tio’tia:ke/Montreal-based performer, writer, poet, story-teller, curator and multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores aesthetic practices as forms of resistance and/or healing for marginalized communities. Using photography, film, textiles, prints, performance and digital arts, Kama’s work is both deeply personal and political, articulating an anti-colonial praxis through cultural production. On International Women’s Day 2016, Kama was featured by the CBC as one of 9 women artists in Canada whose work is making a difference.

Lori Beavis, Artist in Residence

Lori Beavis has recently completed her PhD in Art Education at Concordia University. Using her Anishinaabe (Mississauga) family history as a starting point, she investigated the intersection of cultural identity and art experiences in the life stories of four contemporary Indigenous women artists. Her research and practice is centred on identity and cultural representation. Lori is of mixed Mississauga – settler descent and a member of Hiawatha First Nation at Rice Lake, Ontario. Lori worked for many years with an artist-run centre. She is an educator, curator and an emerging artist. She has taught art for more than twenty years.

 

Maria Ezcurra, Art Mediator

As Art Mediator, Maria will coordinate activities for the P. Lantz Initiative for Excellence in Education & the Arts, support the projects developed by the Artists-in-Residence, and collaborate with the Faculty of Education community. We’re pleased to welcome Maria back to the Faculty of Education in this new position.

Born in Argentina and raised in Mexico, Maria Ezcurra currently lives in Montreal, where she obtained a PhD at Concordia University with the first research-creation doctoral project presented at the Department of Art Education. Having studied Visual Arts at the UNAM (Mexico), she later pursued graduate studies at the Chelsea College of Art & Design (UK) and at the San Francisco Art Institute (USA). A recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Fulbright-Garcia Robles Scholarship and the FRQSC award, Maria Ezcurra is also a member of the National System of Art Creators (SNCA) in Mexico. She has participated in more than 60 group and 15 individual exhibits in Europe, Australia, Latin and North America, including solo shows in Montreal and Toronto in Canada. Maria has worked as an art teacher and tutor in a number of universities and schools in Mexico and Canada over the past 15 years, and was one of the two first Artists-in-Residence working at McGill’s Faculty of Education as part of the P. Lantz Initiative for Excellence in Education & the Arts.
