Media Spotlight – Shaheen Shariff, DISE, and Farah Stonebanks, Article in National Post on Social Media Bullying

Shaheen Shariff from the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, and Farah Stonebanks, a graduate student researcher, have written an opinion article in the National Post on the social media bullying crisis children face.

Canadian children have easy online access to globally divisive and offensive social and news media, and many opportunities to engage in it. The opportunity to build online social capital and gain popularity can lead many children to engage in negative and offensive online communication and feel rewarded for this behaviour. At the same time, social media also provides children and youth with access to positive communities and opportunities to engage in activist movements.
