Dr. Lisa Starr Discusses Teacher Retention in Quebec on CJAD 800 Radio

Published: 2 November 2021

According to an article in the Journal de Montréal, 40% of aspiring teachers drop out or change career paths. The article only sites the impact in Quebec's French universities (i.e. Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Montréal, and UQAM), but CJAD 800 Radio reached out to find out how McGill Education students are faring, given the situation in the French sector.

Department of Integrated Studies in Education Chair, Dr. Lisa Starr talks with Aaron Rand and Natasha Hall on "Montreal Now" about how McGill's B.Ed and MATL programs are not seeing the same attrition. Dr. Starr states that enrollment in teacher education programs at McGill is up this year, which is expected to lead to better retention.  Moreover, Dr. Starr comments on the growing trend of diversification in education, alluding to the fact where the public may recognize a state of attrition, those students who do not become elementary or high school teachers are potentially fulfilling very worthwhile educator roles in other career sectors."Society still equates an Education degree with becoming a teacher, but education takes place in a myriad of different contexts."
