“Physical Education Doesn’t Deserve an F – Resilience as a path to getting an A from the Active Healthy Kids Report Card”

Guest Speaker:  Jonathan McGavock, Ph.D.

Associate Professor and CIHR Applied Health Chair, University of Manitoba

The focus of this presentation is on the role of schools and physical education teachers in addressing the rising burden of obesity and physical inactivity among Canadian children. Strategies to reduce the burden of obesity and physical inactivity in youth over the past 30 years have largely failed. Moreover, school-based strategies for obesity prevention or activity promotion are largely irrelevant to the needs of youth, and among Indigenous youth who suffer most from these disparities, these strategies can also be viewed as immoral and unethical. The purpose of this talk is to provide a path for physical education teachers and schools to overcome these failures.

Lecture is free.
