Open and Interactive Laboratories in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education

Time: 10 am -5 pm
Place: 475 Pine Avenue West (Various labs within the building) [Map]

The research laboratories of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education are located in the Currie Gymnasium as well as associated research institutes. Come and see the intriguing questions posed by our researchers as they push forward our understanding of humans in action; from molecular, anatomical, physiological, psychological and societal levels of analysis. Peek through microscopes, have your body composition assessed, see how fast you can shoot a puck on an indoor skating surface, perform a movement skills test, complete a form to determine your motivation for physical activity, discuss coaching issues, and listen to your muscles.

To celebrate the first 100 years of our Department, Greg Reid ’70 has written a book about the Department’s history. Roots extend to Frederick Barnjum in 1862, McGill’s first Instructor of Gymnastics. The McGill School of Physical Education began on May 27, 1912 primarily through efforts of Ethel Mary Cartwright and included visions from Robert Tait McKenzie. It developed from a one-month diploma to full degree under the stewardship of Arthur Stanley Lamb. See discussion of how the Department balanced a human movement foundation with pedagogical knowledge and experiences for 100 years. The graduate program began with Master’s students in 1969 and saw its first PhD student complete in 1988. Today the Department is committed, at the undergraduate level, to a Physical and Health Education teacher preparation program and a B.Sc. Kinesiology program. We are fully integrated into the university with teaching and research collaborations throughout many faculties.
