2004 Agrı-Dogubeyazıt

On July 2, 2004, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes the rural areas of Doğubeyazıt in Ağrı. Cumhuriyet headlines "Küçük Depremde Büyük Acı" (Great Pain from a Small Earthquake), reporting that cement houses remain intact while earthen homes collapse.

Milliyet reports the earthquake under the headline "Öteki Türkiye" (The Other Türkiye), emphasizing regional marginalization. The newspaper highlights a photo of two children in front of a damaged house, contrasting it with Türkiye's European aspirations. While world leaders gather in İstanbul, photos reveal the tragic deaths of children and mourning families resulting from this minor quake.  Images of a woman bathing her child in a basin and the tent city illustrate the struggle for life after the earthquake. The risk posed by nearby dams and oil pipelines is also noted.
