PARTNERS

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay is the only institution in the area.


OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the English and French professional language training is to meet the organization’s specific needs. The Cree language is the first language spoken by the majority of the Board’s clients and by a significant number of employees. English is the second language of most of the clients and the main working language. French is the first language of a growing portion of the labour force and the official language of Québec. Therefore, all three of these languages have a particular importance for the Board for various reasons.


NEEDS AND PRIORITIES

  • To offer adequate French and English training to facilitate communication between the worker  and the client and among staff.
  • For 2010-2011, with regard to language training, to give priority to the Chisasibi community;
  • To provide information to other Cree communities in the next two years.

  • Professional English language section:

DESCRIPTION OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES

  • Training activities: Face-to-face teaching by qualified professional trainers. Courses consist of 45 training hours (three hours per week for nine weeks) in 2010-2011 and will consist of 69 hours in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.
  • Learner evaluation: Each learner will be graded by an oral test administered by a qualified trainer. Learner follow-up will be done during the training by observing interactive activities, for example, role playing. The final evaluation will consist of a written exam and an oral presentation.
  • Training materials: Trainers will use adapted and original materials. 

The courses will take place on the institutions’ premises.


PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES

The courses will be held during work hours and the staff will not be replaced.


TRAINING ORGANIZATION

Instructors acting as subcontractors of the Board.


BUDGET ALLOCATED FOR 2010-2011: $11,880
