Objectives
The resources in French for Specific Purposes were inventoried under Measure 2 of the Training and Human Resources Development Project with a view to retaining English-speaking health and social service professionals in the regions throughout Quebec.
The inventory was conducted in Quebec’s English-language educational institutions which grant diplomas, degrees and certificates qualifying for the health and social service professions. The focus was on French Second Language courses intended specifically to help students enrolled in such programs acquire the French language skills required for professional practice.
According to the statistics, a student who successfully interns in a given host institution is often offered a permanent position in that same institution. Students who have developed the necessary French-language skills and self-confidence are more comfortable applying for placement in a French-language institution and discover through that experience that they are qualified to work there in the long term. Having joined the staff of a French-language institution, those young professionals are additional resources for catering to English-speaking clients.
This inventory is intended to
- take stock of present resources in Quebec’s English-language secondary and post-secondary institutions, i.e.:
- inventory the institutions that teach French For Specific Purposes focused on health care and social services, and catalogue their current programs and courses;
- compile descriptions of those courses and the instructional materials used;
- compile program coordinator names and contact information;
- post that information to our website;
- provide for inter-institutional contacts to promote the sharing of resources and rationalize present and future efforts for developing additional resources.
Methodology
The research was conducted in February 2008 on the websites of Quebec’s public educational institutions:
- English-language school boards (adult vocational training centres),
- English-language CEGEPs,
- universities.
Additional information was gathered by telephone.
Phases
- Note all health and social service programs leading to a diploma/degree.
- Note all French courses designed to meet the express needs of future professionals.
N.B. Although the CEGEPs offer Block “A” and “B” FSL courses focused on specific fields of study, some institutions have found it necessary to develop French for Specific Purposes courses for their health and social service students.

Langue française et communication (602-101-BB) French Language and Communication This intermediate written and oral communication course seeks to better prepare nursing students for practising their profession in a Francophone milieu. Vocabulary building and the teaching of grammatical concepts will develop the skills essential for comprehension and written expression. Another focus will be on oral communication in the workplace. Communication technique (602-CWA-BB) Technical Communication This intermediate course is for nursing technology students who have successfully completed 602-101-BB. Students learn the vocabulary specific to their field of study and improve their written and oral communication skills. Langue française 2 pour étudiants de Sciences infirmières et d’Inhalothérapie French Language II for Nursing and Respiratory Therapy Students (602-HSA-Nursing) This 45-hour intermediate course (Block “B”) is part of the curriculum series of French courses and is intended for nursing and respiratory therapy students who have successfully completed their Block “A” course: 602-100-03 (French Language I) or 602-101-03 (French Language and Communication). Students practise reading, writing and communication in French using vocabulary relating to health care and situations encountered in a hospital environment. Nursing and respiratory therapy students acquire basic language skills for practising their profession (article 35 of the Charter of the French Language). Course Material Le français des soins de la santé, recueil de textes et d’exercices, Yung Truong, Vanier College 2006. The 2008-2009 version will be available for the 2009 winter semester. A website for students enrolled in 602-HAS–Nursing is under construction. It will provide reading and comprehension exercises (multi-choice questions, crossword puzzles for vocabulary building, and fill-in-the-blank exercises) to reinforce the material covered in class. Tutorial - OLF French Exam This Tutorial Course for the OLF French Exam focusing on the medical sector, is for candidates who must pass their French Exam in order to meet the requirement of their professional order and qualify for a permanent license to practice their profession in Québec. Registration is restricted to Health Professionals. Duration: 42 hours This Tutorial Course is offered by the Centre for Training and Development of Dawson College. |

FRSL332-002 and FRSL333-002 These two pilot courses give McGill Health Care and Social Work students who already have an intermediate II level in French the opportunity to develop writing skills for working in a French-speaking milieu. These courses aim at helping students prepare for proficiency exams and build up the competencies and confidence needed to apply for internship in a French-language institution. These are 3-credit courses. Oral French Course for Health and Social Work Students This pilot course gives McGill Health Care and Social Work students who already an intermediate II level in French the opportunity to develop their oral skills and build their vocabulary in French. This is a non-credit, tuition-free course. Enrolment limited to 15 students. |

These French courses for specific purposes were all developed through a grant from McGill University’s Training and Human Resources Development Project.
