Student Bursaries

 

Description

Created by the McGill University Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project, the Bursary Program is part of the Retention Program.

The Bursary Program is divided into two (2) categories:  

Category 1 is intended to provide financial incentive to students from selected Quebec regions with appropriate English and French language skills pursuing full-time studies in the area of health and social services in a government recognized educational institution located outside their region.  Students who are awarded bursaries must commit to returning to a Quebec region following the successful completion of their studies to work for a minimum of one year in a public health and social services institution or related organization

Category 2 is intended to provide financial incentive to students from selected Quebec regions with appropriate English and French language skills pursuing full-time studies in the area of health and social services in a government recognized educational institution located within their region.  Students who are awarded bursaries must commit to staying in Quebec region following the successful completion of their studies to work for a minimum of one year in a public health and social services institution or related organization

Bursary amounts for the 2016-2017 academic year:

Category 1
University: Up to $10,000 per student registered for full-time studies.
Cégep / college: Up to $5,000 per student registered for full-time studies.
Secondary school vocational training: Up to $5,000 per student registered for full-time studies.

Category 2
University: Up to $5,000 per student registered for full-time studies.
Cégep / college: Up to $2,500 per student registered for full-time studies.
Secondary school vocational training: Up to $2,500 per student registered for full-time studies.

Students wishing to apply for the Bursary Program must submit their application forms to the contact person at the participating community network in their region.

Some educational institutions have already received a special mandate to train health and social services professionals, who will be able to offer services to remote Aboriginal communities whose second language is English. The students of these educational institutions are also eligible for bursaries and may apply for the Bursary Program through participating educational institutions. Students from aboriginal communities in remote regions of Quebec can contact the McGill Project for more information.

The budget allocated by the McGill Project for the Bursary Program is:

• $205 000 for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

The bursaries are open to students from selected Quebec regions who:

  • Are Canadian citizens who have resided in a selected Quebec region for at least 2 years (24 months);
  • Are permanent residents who have resided in a selected Quebec region for at least 2 years (24 months);
  • Have appropriate English and French language skills;
  • Are pursuing studies in a government recognized educational institution located outside their region;
  • Are currently accepted into or pursuing full-time studies (the educational institution that the students are attending considers them as such) in a government recognized health and social services program  that permits the students to work professionally in Quebec upon completion of studies;
  • Are registered full-time for the 2016-2017 academic year;
    Please note that the Bursary Program is not applicable to students:
    - Registered in independent or non-degree programs;
    - Registered in distance and on-line training programs.
  •  Are committed, following completion of studies, to return to a selected Quebec region to work in the field of health and social services in a public health and social services institution or related organization for a minimum of one year, for each bursary awarded;
  • Agree, upon completion of studies, to participate in any follow-up, monitoring or evaluation of the Program conducted by the McGill Project and/or the community network.
The community network is responsible for ensuring that the students meet the Eligibility Criteria.

Recipients

From 2011-2016, 145 bursaries were allocated totalling $633,750.
