The MBA curriculum focuses on maximizing student preparation for future careers through a streamlined, one-semester core, a choice of four concentrations and an experiential component. By leveraging the significant research and teaching strengths of Desautels' international faculty and incorporating the experiences of global business leaders, the curriculum offers an integrated multi-disciplinary, problem-solving approach grounded in practice. Advanced management concepts are integrated with case studies and examples to ground theory in the real world.
At the same time, an integral part of our approach is a rigorous focus on personal responsibility - Desautels students know that one person can make a difference, and one excellent leader can change the world. We train future leaders.
Within our basic academic framework, students find diverse opportunities to explore management subjects of personal interest and apply their learning to real life business situations. Students are given the opportunity to develop their unique profiles as the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.
Our MBA was among the pioneers of 'integration' within advanced management education. By prioritizing the functional linking of business disciplines and managerial skills within an organizational context, our students benefit significantly. This is highlighted in our 'core' courses - developing and using cross-disciplinary decision-making skills to formulate integrated solutions addressing complex business issues. Through our integrated management approach, students learn that business success comes from working across boundaries - regardless of whether these are organizational, national or cultural. The program's modular core blends case studies, exercises, discussions, group work, participatory role-playing and lectures in creating a maximal learning environment. This experiential, practical approach is especially relevant for the large portion of our students changing careers or coming to us from abroad.
The redesigned MBA curriculum offers students their choice among four focused, relevant concentrations reflecting current business trends and leveraging the significant research and teaching strengths of the faculty. Combined with a variety of flexible program options, students benefit from a choice of concentrations, electives, and opportunities tailored to their personal career goals and aspirations.
A global presence and perspective is a vital asset for today's MBA graduate. At McGill, we open up that opportunity through a range of international exchange program options with prestigious business schools around the world, as well as through a summer school abroad option. Students join colleagues in an international setting, gaining valuable experience and making future connections to further their careers.
Our approach to management education emphasizes a worldwide focus, extending throughout our MBA structure. We offer a diverse student body and faculty highly representative of the international business community. Similarly, the focus in our classrooms emphasises an integrated globalized economy, positioning our students for leadership roles on the worldwide stage.
Our curriculum links teaching and research with actual business practice to ensure classroom learning is relevant to the workplace. The MBA program is taught by one of the top faculties in the world, with over 80% of our full-time faculty from abroad. Our professors, recruited from prominent universities from around the world (including McGill), are not only leading researchers, but also excellent teachers - a key component of the educational experience at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill.
In addition, students have the opportunity to learn from ultra-successful external leaders who share their experiences and expertise with our MBA students in a variety of ways, including:
- Desautels Global Experts: Experts from around the world are linked to the various concentrations. Examples of their involvement includes: guest speaking, mentoring, judging for the Desautels MBA case competition, and providing career advice.
- Executives in Residence: Present and former CEOs share their extensive experience and expertise with our students. Examples of their involvement includes: acting as course lecturers, panelists, attending lunches/dinners with our MBA students, and providing career advice.
