DESCRIPTION:The Human Behaviour-Change Project: Behaviour Science meets Com
puter Science\n\nDespite significant investment in programs to change beha
viour\, interventions vary greatly in their success.  Answering ‘What work
 s\, compared to what\, how well\, for whom\, in what settings\, for what b
ehaviours and why?’ remains problematic for researchers\, policy-makers an
d practitioners. Efforts to synthesise evidence have traditionally been hi
ndered by poorly reported intervention evaluations\, and by the sheer scal
e on which reports are published: vaster than humans can synthesise and ac
cess.\n\nComputers have the prerequisite capacity and speed but require an
organisational structure to do the task successfully. The Human Behaviour
-Change Project (HBCP) brings together behavioural scientists\, computer s
cientists and systems architects to build an Artificial Intelligence syste
m to scan the world literature on behaviour change\, extract key informati
on and use this to advance our understanding of human behaviour and answer
key questions about effective behaviour change interventions. The HBCP wi
ll revolutionise our ability to synthesise\, interpret and deliver evidenc
e on behaviour change interventions that is up-to-date and tailored to use
r need and context.\n\nIn this lecture I will present the rationale for th
e HBCP and its main activities:\n\n\n	Developing an Ontology of Behaviour C
hange Interventions suitable for computation\,\n	Annotating published liter
ature using the ontology and Natural Language Processing\,\n	‘Training’ an
Artificial Intelligence system using machine learning to extract\, synthes
ise and interpret evidence\, generating novel hypotheses\n	Developing an in
terface\, enabling users to interrogate and update the resulting database.
\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nSusan Michie is Professor of Health Psycholog
y and Director of the Centre for Behaviour Change at University College Lo
ndon. Michie’s research focuses on behaviour change in relation to health:
how to understand it theoretically and apply theory to intervention devel
opment\, evaluation and implementation. She has also developed innovative
methods for intervention reporting and evidence synthesis\, working across
disciplines such as information science and computer science. She leads t
 he Human Behaviour-Change Project.\n
