Strategy making is becoming increasingly open. When done well, it creates a shared understanding, a stronger commitment, and effective implementation. It’s inclusive of more and varied stakeholders, and it’s often more transparent, as plans and knowledge tend to be shared more widely. Innovative technologies, new cultural mindsets, and contemporary business models are enabling open strategy across organization types and segments of society with long-lasting global implications.

The McGill Desautels Faculty of Management welcomes Richard Whittington, Professor of Strategic Management at Saïd Business School, Oxford University to share his insight in dialogue with Marie Josée Lamothe, Professor of Practice at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management. The symposium will explore the implications of initiating and implementing open strategy. Drawing from Whittington’s research case studies and from Lamothe’s 25 years of managerial experience in multinational and start-up ecosystems, they will elaborate on the importance of coaching, communication, and coordination in the implementation of open strategy.


Richard Whittington: Professor of Strategic Management at Saïd Business School, Oxford University, is a leader in the field of Strategy-as-Practice research. His research is exploring the recent ‘opening’ of strategy, as it becomes more transparent internally and externally, and involves a widening range of people from inside and outside the organisation. He is the author of two highly influential textbooks on strategy: Exploring Strategy, which has sold more than one million copies, and What is Strategy–and Does it matter?, a past winner of the Management Consulting Association prize for the best management book of the year. His research has featured in the Financial Times, The Sunday Times, and People Management. Along with serving on the boards of scholarly journals and associations, Professor Whittington has held full or visiting appointments at Harvard Business School, HEC Paris, Imperial College, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Toulouse, and Warwick Business School. He has a PhD from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, an MBA from Aston Business School, and MA in Modern History from Magdalen College, Oxford. Dr. Whittington is a Fellow of the British Academy of Management.

Marie Josée Lamothe: Professor of Practice at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management, McGill University, with 25 years of International Management experience in the Consumer Products world, has been nominated among Canada’s 40 Global Leaders (Canadian Business magazine). She is the founder of Tandem International, an advisory firm specialized in Omni-channel branding & profitability. She was the Managing Director at Google Canada for nearly 5 years. Prior to Google, she held various roles during her 12 years at L’Oréal, ranging from International Marketing Director in France to CMO & CCO in Canada. Mrs. Lamothe sits on the boards of The ALDO Group, LightSpeed HQ and OSMO, a not-for-profit organization created to support the development of the start-up ecosystem in Québec. Mrs. Lamothe was also appointed to the 2017 Advisory Council on Economy and Innovation for the Government of Quebec. Moreover, she has been appointed by the Treasury Board of Canada to the Audit Committee for Ministries such as Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and nominated by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) Commissioner to its external advisory panel. In the past years, Mrs. Lamothe was recognized among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the Financial Post and Canada’s Marketers of the Year by Strategy magazine. The Boardlist named her among the Top 10 women in Tech in Canada, InfoPresse nominated her as a Personality of the Year in Quebec. Forbes Magazine and Social Media Magazine (US) recognized her among Top Marketing Minds to follow on social media in North America. Mrs. Lamothe is a graduate of Mathematics and Economics from the University of Montreal.
