McGill University Health Center (MUHC)
The MUHC Department of Medicine includes medical specialty services of the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute. The relocation to the new Glen site is currently underway. With approximately 300 full time faculty, it is the largest department in the MUHC. The Department is organized into 15 divisions including Allergy and Immunology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Metabolism. Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Hematology, Infectious Disease and Centre for Tropical Medicine, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Nephrology, Physiatry and Rehabilitation Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology. The Department also hosts the Medical Oncology Division in partnership with the Department of Oncology, and the MGH Neurology Division in partnership with the Department of Neurology.
In addition to its clinical divisions, the Department has a number of research divisions and centres including a large Division of Clinical Epidemiology, the Center for the Study of Host Resistance (in partnership with the McGill Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Biochemistry), the Meakins-Christie Laboratories and several laboratories in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
As an academic department, the MUHC Department of Medicine has an extensive research and teaching mission, which is built around its major clinical activities. The Department supports a number of in-patient units including four general medical clinical teaching units (two at both the MGH and RVH). The Department also supports specialty in-patient services in cardiology, geriatrics and hematology/oncology at both the MGH and RVH. There is also an in-patient ward, ICU and Day Hospital at the Chest Institute. However, the majority of the Department’s activities are focused on outpatients, which account for approximately 300,000 visits per year.
