The McGill University Faculty of Dentistry fully supports the goals of the Outreach Program. One of the main components of becoming a health care professional is learning one’s obligation to the community and attending to the needs and sensitivities of a diverse client population. The clinics’ atmosphere is one of cooperation, as students, administrators, and veteran dentists all participate - even the Dean of Dentistry has been seen filling out patient charts.
The Outreach Program has been integrated into the curriculum at the Faculty of Dentistry under a mandatory course entitled “Community Dental Clinics”. All dental students and pre-dent students participate in the clinics: third- and fourth-year students as clinicians, first- and second-year students as assistants and pre-dent students as registration assistants. Program attendance is required during all four years and pertinent didactic material is presented during designated lectures and tutorials.
