Dr. Julie Drakoulakou awarded 2020 Dr. Ralph Silverstone Teaching Award

This year’s Dr. Ralph Silverstone Teaching Award has been awarded to Dr. Julie Drakoulakou, DDS '90. This award recognises the outstanding contribution to the development of the undergraduate teaching program in Dentistry.

Dr. Drakoulakou is a true McGillian and has contributed significantly to the development of the undergraduate paediatric program since her arrival at the Faculty as a lecturer in 1991. Her lectures and clinical sessions always have a unique approach that makes them enjoyable and memorable. Her boundless energy and timeless commitment to the Faculty are appreciated by her students, patients, and colleagues. Encouraged by her mentors Dr. Stephane Schwartz and Dr. McCorry to get involved, and a strong believer in giving back to her University and to the community at large, she jumped on the opportunity and has never looked back in 30 years.

Dr. Julie Drakoulakou was born in Sparta, Greece. When she was 5 years old her parents immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal. She has lived in the city since then, making it her adopted home. Growing up in Outremont she went Guy Drummond Elementary School followed by Outremont High School, and then Vanier College before entering McGill University. Before arriving in the Faculty of Dentistry she obtained two McGill Degrees, one in Microbiology and Immunology and another Occupational Therapy. Following her graduation in Dentistry, she completed her residency at the Montreal Children’s Hospital where she remained an active clinician for 25 years.

Dr. Drakoulakou also established her own private practice in the Parc-Extension neighbourhood in 1992. This District has been traditionally welcomed new arrivals to Canada, and her patients often remind her of her own journey. She practices general dentistry with an emphasis on children’s dental health. She has been a very strong advocate of preventative dental care and has been involved in educational programs in various schools and organizations.

Dr. Drakoulakou met her husband and tireless supporter while studying at McGill and together they have three grown up children two of them being involved in the legal profession and one in the medical profession.

Dr. Drakoulakou, chapeau, bravo et tous nos compliments!
